๐Ÿ“… Last updated: March 2026 (EA v1.0) ยท โฑ๏ธ 12 min read

Welcome to the Cinderia beginner's guide on cinderia.wiki. This page will take you from your very first run all the way to consistently clearing Chapter 3+. We cover controls, core mechanics, the best starting builds for Rue, how meta-progression works, and the most common mistakes that kill new players. Bookmark this page โ€” you'll want to refer back.

๐ŸŽฎ Cinderia Controls Reference

Cinderia uses a keyboard + mouse layout by default. Controller support exists but is best with remapping. Memorizing these controls early makes the difference between a panicked death and a clean dodge.

WASD / Arrow Keys Move character
J / Left Click Basic Attack (combo chain)
K / Right Click Active Skill (costs Energy)
Space Dash (default 2 charges, upgradeable)
L / E Secondary Skill
Shift Dodge (directional)
Tab Open Inventory / Equipment
ESC Pause / Menu

โš”๏ธ How Combat Works in Cinderia

Cinderia's combat revolves around a three-layer system: basic attack chains, energy-spending active skills, and dash-triggered passive procs. Understanding all three โ€” and how they chain together โ€” is the key to strong runs.

Basic Attack Chains: Tap attack repeatedly to build a combo. Rue's default chain is 5 hits before a combo finisher. Certain passives like Shadow Twin Strike (extra shadows on 4th hit) or Cross Slash (replace dash strike) transform specific hits in the chain. Learn your character's chain length before assuming skills are active.

Energy System: Energy regenerates from basic attack hits and specific passives. Active skills cost 1โ€“4 energy. You start with a max of 6 energy; this can be increased through equipment. Running dry means no active skills until your chain builds it back up โ€” plan your burst windows carefully.

Dash Mechanics: Dash is your primary defensive and offensive tool. You start with 2 charges (recharge independently over ~1 second each). Meta-progression can raise this to 3. During a dash you are briefly i-framing (invulnerable). Crucially, dash-triggered passive skills โ€” like Shadow Raid โ€” fire during this window, meaning skilled players use dashes offensively to proc enormous damage, not just to escape.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Your First Cinderia Run โ€” Step by Step

1
Choose Rue
Rue is the starting character and requires no unlock. She's the most forgiving and has the widest range of viable builds. Don't try other characters until you've cleared Chapter 1 at least once.
2
Read upgrade descriptions carefully
Every upgrade room matters. Don't just click the biggest damage number โ€” read whether a skill requires a specific setup to work. Shadow Raid is only strong if you have a dash-trigger passive to combine it with.
3
Seek the Poison Shadow combo
Try to assemble: Throwing Dagger + Shadow Raid + Poison Coat / Poison Bomb Dash. This combination deals consistent DPS with forgiving execution โ€” perfect for clearing your first Ashen Judicator encounter.
4
Don't ignore HP rooms
HP restoration rooms appear after certain room clears. Always take them when below 70% health. New players often skip these chasing upgrades and then die to a boss with 15% health remaining.
5
Fight the Ashen Judicator carefully
Dodge laterally during the Mounted Charge. Watch for the dismount animation at 50% HP โ€” this is Phase 2. Save a dash charge for the ground slam. See the full Chapter 1 Boss Guide.
6
After dying โ€” upgrade at the hub
Every death returns you to the hub. Spend your Soulfire candles at the Nun's shrine immediately. Max HP first, then extra dash. Then try again โ€” each run you'll get further as the meta-upgrades compound.

๐Ÿ—ก๏ธ Essential Rue Tips for New Players

๐Ÿ—ก๏ธ Prioritize dash-triggered passives early
Rue's entire damage identity comes from what happens when she dashes. Shadow Raid (become untargetable + summon shadows) and Poison Bomb Dash are game-defining picks. Take them whenever offered.
โšก Energy management is critical
Rue generates energy from basic attack chains and specific passives (e.g., Deadly Serial Stabs restores 4 energy on hit). Never spend your last energy charge โ€” you need it for burst windows and emergency escapes.
๐ŸŽฏ Throwing Dagger is a core skill, not filler
Even though it appears simple, Throwing Dagger triggers the Shadow Summon passive on every hit and enables huge burst when combined with shadow-enhancing upgrades. Always pick the upgrade that makes Shadow deal 250% damage.
โ˜ ๏ธ Respect Erosion thresholds
Your first Curse is usually manageable. Your second and third compound quickly. Plan ahead: if you're already at 80% Erosion, skip that powerful relic unless it immediately wins you the run.
๐Ÿƒ Dodge through enemies, not away
Most players instinctively dodge backward. In Cinderia, dashing through the boss puts you behind them โ€” most boss hitboxes don't extend behind them, giving you a free window.

๐Ÿฐ Recommended Meta-Progression Order

Spend your Soulfire at the Nun's shrine in this order for maximum early-game gains. Soulfire is earned by completing rooms and killing elites; Stones come from completing standard rooms and are used with the Craftsman NPC.

1
Max HP +20 (Soulfire ร—3)
Survivability is the #1 run-ender for beginners. Every HP point matters.
2
Extra Dash Charge (Soulfire ร—5)
3 dashes instead of 2 dramatically increases both offense and defense.
3
Revival Chance (Soulfire ร—8)
One revive per run is a free second chance against bosses.
4
Max HP +20 again
Stack more HP before focusing on damage upgrades.
5
Library (Craftsman, Stones ร—50)
Unlocks story background and additional skill unlock options.

๐Ÿ”ด Understanding Erosion & Curses

โš ๏ธ Most Common Beginner Death Cause
Taking a Curse at 40% Erosion and then stacking a second Curse by Chapter 3 is the most common run-killer for new Cinderia players. Both Curses combine โ€” suddenly you're dealing 40% less damage to distant enemies and facing 12% more of them. This is often unrecoverable.

Every time you select an upgrade or take a powerful piece of equipment, your Erosion meter fills. Think of it as the price of power. Once it crosses a threshold, you're given a Curse โ€” a permanent debuff that lasts the entire run. Common Curses include:

  • Deal less damage to enemies further away (huge in open rooms)
  • Enemy count +12% per room (attrition over a full run)
  • Skill cooldowns +20%
  • Energy maximum -1

Purify rooms (identified by a candle symbol on the map) remove one Curse. Always take a Purify room if your most debilitating Curse is affecting your build. Also, visit the Equipment page for items that can mitigate Curse effects.

โ“ Cinderia Beginner FAQ

What is the best starting build in Cinderia? ๏ผ‹
For beginners, the Poison Shadow build is the most forgiving: Throwing Dagger + Shadow Raid + Poison Coat (or Poison Bomb Dash). It generates consistent DPS without requiring precise timing, and the shadow proc passive amplifies your damage passively.
How do I get more characters in Cinderia? ๏ผ‹
Play through Chapter 1 to unlock Valkyrie. Clear the Chapter 2 boss to unlock Forest Princess. The 4th character is not yet available in Early Access v1.0. Use Soulfire at the Nun's shrine to accelerate meta-progression between unlocks.
Why does my Erosion keep filling up? ๏ผ‹
Erosion accumulates every time you select a skill upgrade or powerful piece of equipment. There is no way to prevent this โ€” only manage it. Seek Purify rooms (candle icon on the map) to remove one curse. It's best to plan your build around taking the most impactful early options and then being selective as Erosion fills.
What do Stones do in Cinderia? ๏ผ‹
Stones are a meta-currency collected in runs. Bring them to the Craftsman NPC in the hub village to construct buildings: Library (lore + skill variety), Statue (increases damage output), Training Ground (improved starting stats). Prioritize the Statue for combat progression.
How long is a Cinderia run? ๏ผ‹
A full run through all 5 Early Access chapters takes 30โ€“60 minutes depending on skill level and build speed. Early runs will be shorter as you'll likely die before Chapter 3. With meta-progression, consistent Chapter 5 clears become achievable around 5โ€“10 hours of total playtime.
Is Cinderia similar to Hades? ๏ผ‹
Cinderia shares Hades' roguelite structure (rooms, upgrades, meta-progression, boss gates) and strong action combat DNA. Key differences: Cinderia uses an Erosion/Curse system instead of boons, features fully distinct characters with exclusive skill pools rather than weapon types, and has a more dense hand-drawn Asian dark fantasy aesthetic. If you liked Hades, you'll feel at home within the first run.
